12. OPM/Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mangaawit

Organisasyong Pilipinong mang-aawit is an organization which helps in promoting and enriching our Philippine music industry. The members of the said organization are the Filipino artists also. They supposed to be helping OPM to be on the top of the hit charts. But it seems that we are having a conflict with some of their projects.

An article in Public Static entitled "Why Filipino Music is Dying?" states "Killing competition by tax chokes is both underhanded and unsportsmanlike. Instead of trying to improve their acts, OPM pulls this, something tad step short of artistic fascism. So pull out a gun and take us hostage already. To make things worse, OPM refuses to eat its own cooking by SUPPORTING THE FOREIGN ACTS AND WATCHING IN THE VIP AREA OF EVERY FOREIGN ACT CONCERT. If OPM really wanted to compete, they'd take the foreign acts as a challenge to up the ante. If ever, foreign performances might even develop the local industry by inspiring up and coming acts, who might otherwise be too poor to watch it because a certain organization wanted poor people to stop wasting their money on useless concerts of foreigners and waste it on their useless concerts instead. "

Sometime Filipinos tend to do things that is not right. We thought that we are supporting OPM but actually we are not. If we cannot refuse to listen or to entertain foreign acts let's admit it and don't hide it. It is better to admit that you are into both local and foreign music than pretending you are loyal to OPM but secretly sneaking out to witness a foreign acts.

DISCUSSION

What is preventing Original Pinoy Music to be on the mainstream?

I.              Definition of OPM

OPM or Original Pinoy Music originally referred only to Filipino Pop song especially in ballad form, but now it refers to any type of music created by Filipino artist regardless of location when it was composed. It can be in Filipino or in English language. Unfortunately, it seems to be at the last part of the playlist of most Filipinos.

Jhoanna Paola Ballaran (2012) stated that "Back then, radio stations never ran out of OPM to play while bars and clubs overflowed with gigs and packed audiences. Bands like Teeth, Yano, Eraserheads, and Rivermaya were under the limelight and gained nationwide popularity, and their songs are still an anthem today, after more than a decade has passed.

In an industry dominated by foreign music and endless remakes, one can’t deny the fact that popular music has lost its glory because of lack of fresh, new tunes.

Recently, debates and conversations spurred in the online community on a blog article in GMANetwork.com by Leloy Claudio lamenting a Nietzsche-like statement that “OPM is dead” because of lack of support from record labels and the government. Some agreed but more were infuriated, including musicians and fans themselves who tirelessly support the overflowing talents of the underground music scene."

Though OPM is going with the flow of new era, still lots of factors affect its climbing up to the mainstream. This issue needs evidence for us to know the real cause of preventing OPM to be on top of every Filipinos' playlist.

II.      Factors preventing OPM to be on top

        A. International Music

          KPop

KPop has become a viral disease here in the Philippines. Many Filipinos were hooked with different kpop boy bands and girl group's songs. The joyful beat and colorful music video might be the reason why kpop lovers here in the philippines are so addicted to it. Kpop fans here in the philippines are so addicted that they prioritize kpop than OPM.

          American Music

Compared to OPM, American music is much better in terms of using technologies for music videos and sound effects. According to Janneth Ramos (2013) "Filipinos are known to be captivated by anything that is American. It has something to do with Filipinos' English capability. It also serves as our second language. By listening to American music, you'll improve you're English ability somehow. "

        B. Piracy

Most of us only think that international music is the reason why OPM is now dropping down on our playlist. We don't know that piracy has a big part of it. And because of piracy many original albums weren't sold and as a result, people releasing albums will be losing profit.

Janette Toral (2008 stated "Music can indeed be heard everywhere but somebody (record label, radio, tv, bar or malls) paid for its cost. It is hard and perhaps even unfair to go on a price war with pirates as they do not incur expenses other than manufacturing cost. They did not spend money on production and marketing. As a result, record labels are reducing the number of releases. Just a few years back, big record labels will have 12 albums scheduled for release in one year. Today, most labels only have 5-6 albums planned releases for the year. While 1 to 3 big players will likely launch up to 12 albums a year."

III.        Effects of the downfall of OPM

         A. Effect to the OPM artists

Filipino artists are the ones who creates OPM and if it continues to go down they might not be able to produce more original songs. There is a possibility that some of good artists will not be given the opportunity to share their talent.

Acel Van Ommen(2012) stated " Mostly big record labels don’t invest on original Pinoy music, and would rather get a singer with a pretty face or even an actor/actress (that does not even have a talent in singing to cover foreign popular music). This just shows colonial mentality that is deeply rooted in our society. The excuse for this action is that those kind of music sells..and that a pretty face OR the few familiar faces seen on TV sells more than a nobody singing a song from the heart. Another reason is the truth that people don’t buy CDs anymore. They just download it illegally and share it to their friends. The listeners are also not aware that there are a bunch of talented artists with amazing songs out there in the underground scene that are not given a chance to be heard because the radio stations won’t play their songs without “payola” or what they call “song sponsorship”. They would only play your song if you pay a certain fee that ranges to 25-60k a month.( just for one radio station)"

         B. Effect to the culture

It will be a big lost to our culture if we do not help and support OPM. Just imagine our country living without any original song, that is embarrassing. Yes, we, Filipinos are naturally in love with music yet didn't manage to preserve our own music culture.

IV.        Steps that Filipinos are taking to lift up OPM

         A. Concerts promoting OPM

Filipinos are now taking steps in order to promote OPM not just to the philippines but aslo to the other countries. By means of concert filipino artists can showcase their talent and their music to many people. One of the concerts done by filipino artists is "Icons at Arena"

Vladimir Bunoan (2012) stated "An all-star gathering of some of the country's top musical artists formally opened the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena on Saturday night with a celebration of original Pilipino music.

At a time when foreign acts have been dominating the concert scene for the past couple of years, "Icons at the Arena" was a reminder of the excellence of both Filipino singers and their music.

But at the same time, the show also showed how OPM -- or to be more accurate, OPM pop -- seemed to have stalled, with current or even fairly recent local songs under-represented in the two-hour show."

        B. Reviving Old Songs

We have been hearing revivals of old song nowadays, like "Akin Ka Nalang" revived by JM De Guzman whichis originally by Itchyworms.

Aaron Tadeo stated "Reviving old songs also has its perks. It does keep the old songs alive even for the next generations. So even after a few more generations, when these OPM songs are revived, even the kids of our kids could still relish the legacy of original Filipino music."

        C. Making  Song Writing Competitions

ABS-CBN and GMA Network recently held a Song Writing Competition in order to promote OPM and to give oppotunity to those Filipino artists to showcase their talents. This kind of competition gives us hope that OPM still is still alive as long as there are willingto support and make music.

11. Piracy

The philippine music industry is now slowly going down the mainstream. There are many reasons that affects the status of OPM to our very own country. One of the reasons is Piracy. The researcher has been searching about OPM for few months and she found out that piracy here in the Philippines can really affect the music industry specially to the OPM.

An article in ezinearticle.com entitled Helping the Pinoy Music Industries in Your Own Little Ways by Edu Eusebio stated that "Go for the original. Piracy is an alarming illegal practice in the Philippines. As consumers, the best thing that we could do is to give our sincerest support through buying original CDs and music video recordings of local artists. Nowadays, the web has put more pressure on the music industry since people can easily access songs by means of downloading and file sharing. Illicit practice of these activities threatens the thriving music industry. Despite the insistent campaign against piracy by the government, it would never be a resounding success unless we are going to support it wholeheartedly. It's our choice to make a change."(http://ezinearticles.com/?Helping-The-Pinoy-Music-Industry-In-Your-Own-Little-Ways&id=5733209)

Piracy can really affect not just OPM but also the the music industry. If people will continue buying pirated CDs and music videos, the number of people buying original copies of the albums will of course decrease. Filipino people is now using the advantage of technologies in order to earn income or to pay less than what we are supposed to pay. For us Filipinos it's better to buy a CD worth 50 pesos that has the same content as the 250 pesos original copy of an album. Though pirated CDs have a poor quality people who entertain this products are not given the satisfation. And as the result they will not appreciate the beauty of OPM because they thought that the poor quality audio is just the same as the original.

10. Reviving Old Songs

Nowadays, more and more artists are making a revival of old songs. Some of them are doing this to pay tribute to the original singer and composer of the songs. An example of this is the album The Reunion: An Eraserheads tribute album released by star records and star cinema. This album is composed of 14 Eheads' songs revived by various pinoy singers and bands including Vin Dancel, Aiza Seguerra, Jay Durias, Marc Abaya of kjwan, Callalily, Chicosci, 6cyclemind and more.

On the other hand, the researcher read about an article in Yahoo Voices entitled Revival by OPM Artists and its Possible Impact on the Philippine Music Industry by Aaron Tadeo saying " there are a lot of original Filipino songs and a lot of them are coming from the Rock genre and a lot of them are really good. Reviving old songs also has its perks. It does keep the old songs alive even for the next generations. So even after a few more generations, when these OPM songs are revived, even the kids of our kids could still relish the legacy of original Filipino music. So if you'll ask me, just keep it low. Don't revive too much of the old songs. Why not compose an entirely new song that will last? Let's be more competitive."(http://voices.yahoo.com/revivals-opm-artists-its-possible-impact-on-5875260.html)

For the researcher, he's statement is right. It is good to revive old songs if it helps us preserve it and keep it alive for the future generation. But it is not good if we will depend on reviving old songs, we should make more original songs because the generation today is now different to the generation before.

9. OPM musical fanfare

One of the fun activities held to promote Original Pinoy Music is the OPM musical fanfare. It was conducted at Clark Freeport Zone on February 21 to 24, 2013. Many Filipinos and foreigners enjoyed the event because not only the hot air balloons and other flying machines were given exposure but it also gave OPM the opportunity to be heard by the Filipino and foreign audience.

According in an article that the researcher has read in GMA News Online entitled OPM musical fanfare set to lift hot air balloons by Roehl NiƱo Bautista "The Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival will have OPM music specials to cap off two of the festival's four days of hot air balloons, helicopters, kite-flying, and jet flight exhibitions.
Some 32 balloons from 16 countries will light up at dawn at the Omni Aviation Complex on Thursday, February 21. Other morning highlights include the Breitling Jet Team aerobatic exhibition, radio-controlled model aircraft demonstration, skydiving exhibitions and other flying marvels.

More than giving the Filipino audience an opportunity to watch hot air balloons fly, the festival will also let foreign participants experience Pinoy culture."(
http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/295719/lifestyle/travel/opm-musical-fanfare-set-to-lift-hot-air-balloons)

This is a good way for the artists who promotes not just tourism in the Philippines but also the original pinoy music. This is one of the strategies of the artists to show to everyone that OPM can also be used for an extraordinary event like the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival.

8. Tunog Natin: OPM Concert

Because of the status of Original Pinoy Music(OPM), Filipino artists are making steps to promote our music.  They are conducting a lot of activities that we can enjoy for example, a concert. They are organizing a concert and the performers are very good singers and they will play OPM songs all through out the pageant.Filipino artists are giving so much effort for the sake of OPM.

On June 15, 2011, an OPM concert was held in Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati City. According to the article that the researcher had found entitled "Tunog Natin" wows Makati Crowd there were thirteen solo artists who showcased their talent to promote and support our music. There were different performances from different artist that made the concert successful. The performers of the said event includes Jim Paredes who is a very good singer-songwriter, 6cyclemind, sabrina, sitti, the queen of bossa nova and more. The concert was continued in various venues to rally Filipinos audiences to behind OPM and ensure that it will continue to beautifully express the aspiration and collective story of our race-and nurture the heart and soul of every generations to come. They made that concert possible because of their love, passion, and dedication for OPM.

Filipino artists still have faith for our music industry that's why they are doing several activities to promote and to inform the Filipinos about OPM. They are doing lots of activities and strategies for us to enjoy. They are exerting so much effort for us and for our music. Let us support our own music and let us support OPM.
